Workshops

WK1 – SEG Workshop on SEDEX Deposits: A Global Perspective

Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 November 2008

Coolangatta Room, Conrad Jupiters – Gold Coast

Presented by David Leach (USGS) and Peter McGoldrick (CODES, UTAS).

This two-day workshop will provide an overview of the world’s SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits and comparisons to other sediment-hosted ores (e.g., MVT, sandstone-hosted, CRD and distal skarns). The course will include discussions on the favorable geological and tectonic environments for SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits, their spatial and temporal distribution in the rock record, ore controls, sources of the ore fluids and metals, geochemical signatures and exploration insights. The course will discuss many of the giant SEDEX deposits in the world, including the giant Red Dog deposit, Alaska as an example of SEDEX ores deposited in sub-seafloor environments within passive margins and the classical SEDEX deposits of Australia and the Belt Basin Canada that formed in Proterozoic continental extensional basins. Laboratory time will provide opportunities to examine and discuss samples of SEDEX ores and other sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits from around the world.

Dr. David Leach is a senior research geologist with the US Geological Survey. David has 35 years experience working internationally on ore deposits and is considered a world expert on sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits.

Dr. Peter McGoldrick is a Senior Research Fellow at CODES and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Earth Sciences at UTAS. Peter is a world expert on sedimentary Cu and Zn-Pb deposits and the applications of novel analytical techniques to problems of sedimentary ore genesis.

WK2 - Implementing Field Based and HyLogging Spectral Datasets in Exploration and Mining Projects

Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 November
Presented by Dr Sasha Pontual and Dr Jon Huntington

Focus:  This hands workshop is focused on providing participants with skills to handle field spectral data for mapping alteration mineral assemblages, automated logging/mapping, deposit characterisation and developing vectors to mineralisation.  The second day of the workshop is aimed at covering more in depth and advanced skills in handling spectral data. This includes practical exercises aimed at demonstrating specific methods of extracting useful information from spectral data using The Spectral Geologist (TSG).  There will also be the opportunity to review participant’s data sets to discuss specific issues. The workshop will conclude with an open forum to discuss general issues faced by all geologists using spectral data in exploration and mining.  All data used in the workshop is case study material from a variety of geological settings around the Pacific Rim, including porphyry and epithermal systems.
Requirements:  No prior spectral geology experience necessary. Participants are requested to bring along their laptops.

Participants will gain:

  • Skills in understanding spectral data and how to unravel the mineral information in mixed mineral assemblages;
  • Expertise in data handling and processing methods for detailed analysis of spectral data using Spectral Expert systems and The Spectral Geologist (TSG) to optimise the information gained;
  • Understanding of the practical aspects of sampling and measurement issues, including quality control;
  • Knowledge on how to integrate spectral data with other exploration and mining data (e.g. geochemistry, logging data etc) to develop a better understanding of an alteration system.

Who will benefit from the workshop?

  • Geological Survey Geologists and students involved in the AuScope National Virtual Core Library project
  • Geologists and exploration managers who are actively using spectral data or are considering using spectral analysis in an exploration/mining program.
  • All users of spectrometers (ASD Terraspec/Labspec, PIMA, HyChips etc.)
  • All remote sensing geologists working in exploration and mining.

Presenter: Dr Sasha Pontual
Dr Sasha Pontual is a principal geologist at AusSpec International, who has been in the spectral geology field for the last 18 years.  She has worked extensively on the spectral characteristics of a wide variety of alteration systems from a diverse range of geological settings worldwide. Over the last 13 years she has also developed the AusSpec spectral geology training course, which has been presented to a wide range of mining and exploration companies worldwide.

Presenter: Dr Jon Huntington

Jon Huntington is a CSIRO Chief Research Scientist and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He has been involved in numerous industry-focused spectral analysis and geological remote sensing projects since the early ‘80s, and is the principle geological architect of the HyLogging™ concept for automated core and chip logging and leader of the TSG software development team.
