About the ASMV
The Australian Student Mineral Venture (ASMV) was a
series of vacation programs held annually throughout Australia. The ASMV was an
initiative of The AusIMM Education Endowment Fund (EEF) and was open to high
school students in years 10, 11 and 12. These vacation programs allowed
students to find out about careers, lifestyles and opportunities in the minerals
industry and investigate university courses that would suit their abilities and
preferences in terms of subjects such as chemistry, physics, mathematics,
geology and biology.
The ASMVs were fully residential and supervised, with an
ASMV Coordinator responsible for each Region's program. Students visited
mine sites, university laboratories and other facilities, and had the
opportunity to talk with graduates and industry professionals about courses and
careers in the minerals industry, working conditions and prospects.
Hands-on activities were emphasised, and student participation was required
through various activities and projects. The ASMV programs highlighted
some careers that may be familiar to students and others that they didn't know
existed.
Reports & Reviews
View the reports below and read about the past success of
the ASMV program and students' experiences.
Please note that the ASMV program is currently under
revision and it is expected that instead of running separate programs, The
AusIMM Education Endowment Fund (EEF) will offer funding to a variety of similar
programs already in place around Australia.
In 2010, The AusIMM EEF provided funding to the Western
Australian School of Mines “Focus on Mining” Camp which enabled 20 year 12 students
to experience the mining industry.
