WK2 – Assessing the Impacts of Climate Change on Mining: Exploring Vulnerability and Adaption Options for Operations and Communities

Monday 16 August 2010. 12.30 pm – 5.00 pm.

The mining industry is a large and valuable part of Australia’s economy. However, increasing climate variability and future climate change pose a potential range of risks and future demands on the industry and its associated communities. This workshop will provide information developed by the CSIRO to enable participants to explore the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of mining operations and their associated communities to the challenges posed by future climate variability and change. This workshop aims to inform the strategic thinking of mining industry members, local and state government representatives, and regional community representatives regarding the economic and social risks posed by these challenges. This workshop will provide participants with:

  • CSIRO climate projection information for Australia’s key mineral regions;
  • An assessment of the region-specific implications for mining across the operational life-cycle;
  • An assessment of the knock-on and inter-related implications for communities and regions of climate variability and change.

Participants will also be led through a process to assess the vulnerability of their operation, community or region to the risks posed by future climate variability and change, and evaluate their capacity to adapt to these changes.

Venue: TBA, Kalgoorlie
Minimum: 10 participants
Maximum: 30 participants
Cost: There will be no charge to attendees Includes: Participants will be provided with all materials, information provided during the workshop, and presentation materials. Lunch will be provided.
