As previously advised, two of the raw materials for Wilsons Portland Cement
are cement rock and limestone, both of which are quarried by the company.
We now wish to give you a brief outline of these operations.
The major material, cement rock, is obtained for our Portland Quarry at
Tikorangi Hill, which is one mile west of the Works and a familiar landmark to
travellers on state Highway 1.
The geological structure of this deposit is involved, having intensive and
irregular earth movements interpreted as large scale slumps where older rocks
overlay younger rocks - numerous folds, faults and overthrusts are clearly
visible.
