The increased cost of imported oil fuels, coupled with our understandable
reluctance to commit ourselves to the use of nuclear energy, has resulted in a
renewed reliance on coal as a primary source of energy. New Zealand is fortunate
in being fairly well endowed in its coal resources, but their exploitation until
now, has been on a relatively small scale. Future exploitation, whether from
underground or open cast mines, must be on a very much larger scale.
This paper outlines some of the factors which should be considered in
planning large open cast mines.
