FE1: Porphyry-related ore deposits of the Lachlan Fold Belt New South Wales, Australia - FULLY BOOKED
Tuesday 18 – Friday 21 November 2008
The Lachlan Fold Belt of central New South Wales includes some of the world’s highest-grade porphyry gold resources, including the multi-million ounce Ridgeway Au-Cu deposit and the giant Cadia East deposit (containing 18 million ounces Au and 2.9 million tonnes Cu). These Ordovician alkali deposits are hosted in shoshonitic volcanic centres that were once part of the now dismembered Macquarie Island Arc. Ore-bearing hydrothermal alteration (including potassic and propylitic) assemblages, characteristically rich in hematite, occur in and around small multiphase intrusions. The scale of the deposits varies from 100s of metres to kilometres. This special sub-class of porphyry ore deposits exhibit intriguing similarities with IOCG deposits.
This three day field trip will visit both porphyry Au-Cu (e.g., Northparkes and Cadia Valley) and related Au deposits (e.g., Peak Hill and Cowal). Participants will examine in detail the geology of these hydrothermal systems and their environment of formation. Outcrop and drillcore will be used to highlight key characteristics considered important in developing exploration strategies and unravelling ore forming processes. This field-trip is for mineral explorers, resource geologists and researchers interested in the geology of this important class of porphyry ore deposits.

FE2 – Drummond Basin Epithermal
Thursday 27 November – Sunday 30 November 2008
A field workshop visiting the major Drummond Basin epithermal gold/silver deposits hosted by well known specialists Noel White, Cam Switzer and Andrew Vigar. This will be a combination of visits to Pajingo, Twin Hills, Yandan and Mt Coolon and seminars on the key aspects of these deposits conducted on-site. A trip guide and field notes will be provided.
The Drummond Basin is known for its epithermal gold deposits. With early production from the Mt Coolon (Koala) vein between 1914 and 1939, the first systematic modern exploration commenced in 1983 and this work located three new epithermal deposits which were subsequently developed as major gold mines: Pajingo, Wirralie and Yandan. These deposits have a total endowment (production plus remaining resources) of more than 5M oz of gold.
