Australian Ore Deposits – a new AusIMM monograph
The AusIMM is pleased to announce a new publication project that will be the sixth edition in our well-known monograph series relating to the geology of Australian ore deposits. This completely new volume will be a snapshot of Australia’s main deposits today.
Like the five monographs on Australian deposits since 1953, it is expected that this new publication will have a shelf-life of decades and be an important reference well after closure of some of our current mines.
The early planning of the Steering Committee has included a decision that a single volume is most appropriate and while earlier editions included New Zealand and Papua New Guinean content it has been agreed that this edition will have an Australian focus. Plans are already underway for a separate New Zealand monograph and we welcome those with an interest in developing a volume for PNG to contact us. The monograph will also not cover coal geology, again with the intention that this subject area will be covered by a separate publication, to be produced at a later date.
The layout of the monograph will be geological and arranged by major provinces. Overview papers will summarise regional geology and mineralisation for the different geological provinces, and will be followed by numerous descriptions of existing mines. Papers will be descriptive and long-lasting in their focus, will include geochemistry and geophysical aspects where possible, and will have room to discuss genetic ideas. Major mining districts of national significance will be considered for their own longer-term summary papers.

Two webinars have been held for the benefit of authors preparing papers for AOD. The first webinar, presented in January 2016, focused on the nature of the readership for the monograph, authorship and planning the whole manuscript including its various components. The second webinar was presented on 28 April 2016 and focused on the writing stage. The recorded webinars are available for authors via You Tube:
