Metallurgical Society

The role of the Metallurgical Society is to meet the professional needs of AusIMM members whose field of interest and profession is Metallurgy -predominantly minerals processing, hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy - and to promote their profile in the community generally.

The Met Soc is effectively the metallurgical community of The AusIMM. This vital sector of AusIMM Members is represented by the Metallurgical Society Committee of The AusIMM whose members meet bimonthly via teleconference. The Committee undertakes to provide guidance and contribute to areas of activity such as:

Conferences

The Metallurgical Society has co-sponsored international conferences, and also works closely with the AusIMM Events and Conferences Department.

  • Presentations
Distinguished Speakers talk by Professor Alban Lynch on "The early days of flotation at Broken Hill - a case study on the successful interaction of engineers, managers and financiers", presented at the Technical Meeting of the AusIMM Melbourne Branch 5th February 2008.

Publications

The Metallurgical Society Committee makes recommendations on publications to the Publications Task Force and provides guidance to authors. There are also a number of publications projects carried out by the Committee directly.

Some AusIMM publications relevant to the metallurgical community include:

Additional metallurgical and general publications including conference proceedings are available through The AusIMM Online Shop.

    •  Yazawa’s Diagram – Metallurgical Society Special Paper
The Metallurgical Society is publishing “Yazawa’s Diagram” by Toguri and Willis as a one-off special paper in order to make it accessible to the international pyrometallurgical community

The paper had its genesis over 15 years ago when Mervyn Willis (University of Melbourne, retired), and the late Jim Toguri (University of Toronto) discussed the possibility of extending Yazawa’s well known phase diagram  to consider multiple phase systems. Mervyn Willis has now completed the paper, and the Metallurgical Society believes that, at 93, he sets a record as the most mature author of a scientific paper published by AusIMM. Mervyn would like the paper to be a memorial to Jim Toguri. Those who were taught or supervised by Mervyn at the University of Melbourne will also see it as a fitting culmination of his own research career.

    • Minerals Processing Toolbox
The Mineral Processing Toolbox is a compilation of minerals processing information that is constantly being evolved by members on a range of topics. Members are encouraged to contribute to this useful resource by emailing Toolbox Coordinator and Met Soc member Peter Tilyard at peter.tilyard@mmg.com.

    • Access the Toolbox from the Members Only section

    • Publication of Maurice Mawby Monograph 19 Third Edition
The Mawby volumes constitute one of the major publications of the AusIMM. The great value lies in its representation of virtually all Australasian mining and metallurgical operations. It is a valuable body of information for all parties involved in the industry - producers, engineers/consultants, educators, researchers. The Met Soc are currently updating the Mawby Volumes. The product will be in CD form.

If you would like to discuss the project, or become involved please email Met Soc Committee member Andrew Newell at andrew.newell@pincock.com.

Communication

Advocacy

The Metallurgy Society provides input into AusIMM policy positions, particularly around support for minerals education and research and environmental sustainability, addressing issues such as:

Careers and Education Initiatives

The Met Soc provides guidance on scholarships and grants available for students wishing undertaking studies and research in metallurgy.

The Society has also provided input into a diverse range of careers materials such as the following:

    • Career profiles for extractive metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, pyrometallurgists, minerals processing engineers, chemical engineers, etc
    • Graduate Program Guidelines for metallurgists

An online mentoring program is available for both prospective and current metallurgists to learn more about career opportunities, and how to maximise them.
